The "Manual Formatting" Trap

WRONG

Raw SPSS Output

Tests of Between-Subjects Effects

Condition | df = 1 | F = 7.423 | Sig. = .000

Error | df = 48 | Mean Square = 18.23

  • .000 Error: P-values can never be zero. APA requires p < .001.
  • Decimal Mess: SPSS gives too many decimals.
  • Fragmented: Results are split across 5+ tables.

Statistical Analysis

To test the hypothesis, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted...

Results

"There was a significant effect of condition, F(1, 48) = 7.42, p < .001, ηp2 = .13."

  • Perfect P-values: Automatically converts .000 to < .001.
  • Correct Italics: F, p, and symbols are italicized.
  • Synthesized: Combines descriptives and tests into one sentence.

Manual Guide: Common SPSS to APA 7 Issues

Looking for the step-by-step tutorial? Read the SPSS Manual Guide.

1. The "Sig. .000" Problem

SPSS reports p-values as ".000" when they are very small. This is mathematically incorrect because a probability can never be exactly zero. APA 7 Rule: If the value is .000, you must write it as p < .001. never write p = .000.

2. Decimal Places

SPSS often exports 3 or more decimal places. APA 7 guidelines state:

  • 2 decimal places for most statistics (M, SD, t, F, χ2).
  • 3 decimal places for p-values (unless < .001).
  • No leading zero for numbers that cannot exceed 1 (e.g., correlations r = .45, not 0.45; p-values p = .032).

3. Effect Sizes

SPSS often omits effect sizes (like ηp2) for some tests or buries them in separate tables. APA 7 requires reporting them. APA Gen automatically extracts and formats these from your output where available.

Frequently Asked Questions about SPSS & APA

Does APA Gen support SPSS 29 and 30?

Yes, our parser is optimized for SPSS 27 through 31. We handle the standard 'Text Output' format generated by these versions. It does NOT support the new 'Workbook' format yet, so please export as Text.
